Florida Bill Will Target Investigative Agencies
Two of Florida's lawmakers have announced plans to file a new bill that is geared toward preserving the integrity of investigatory agencies in the state. The move stems from Attorney General Pam Bondi's decision to fire two assistant attorney generals. June Clarkson and Theresa Edwards were let go in June. According to Bondi's office, the two were fired due to poor performance.Former special counsel for the Attorney General's Office, Joe Jacquot, resigned his position in May and took a job as senior vice president at Lender Processing Services. The Jacksonville based firm is currently under investigation over the companies foreclosure practices. Florida lawmakers are concerned about the relationship between the Attorney General's Office and Lender Processing Services.
If passed, the new legislation would stop state agency employees that have regulatory or investigative functions from working for any company that is the subject of a criminal or civil investigation or is involved in a judicial proceeding. The bill also cites that any employee would not be able to work for such a company until the investigation has been concluded for a period of two years.
Senator Eleanor Sobel and Florida Representative Darren Soto are heading an investigation into the firing of Clarkson and Edwards. Under the Public Records Act, they have asked that Bondi's office give them all of the records relating to the poor job performance of the two employees that were let go. They have also asked for all of the case numbers for any cases that are currently active and cases that were settled within the last three years that were managed by the two.
